Dharam Ghai (1936- ) joined the UN in 1973, initially with the ILO World Employment Programme. He retired as director of the UN Research Institute for Social Development (1987-97) and became an advisor to ILO and to the International Institute of Labour Studies. In 1969 he was a senior economist on the staff of the Pearson Commission on International Development, prior to which he had been a lecturer in economics at Makerere University in Uganda (1961-65) and Yale University (1965-66) and research professor and then director of Nairobi’s Institute for Development Studies (1967-74). He has served as consultant to UNCTAD, UNIDO, IFAD, FAO, and various governments. He was born in Kenya and educated at Oxford and Yale Universities. His latest publications include Building Knowledge Organisations: Achieving Excellence; Social Development and Public Policies; Economic and Social Progress in Africa; and UN Contributions to Development Thinking and Practice.
