Richard N. Gardner (1927-
) has been closely involved with international affairs and
the UN as a U.S. official, a university professor, a lawyer,
and consultant. From 1961 to 1965 he was deputy assistant
secretary of state for international organization affairs
and was ambassador to Italy, 1977-81, and Spain, 1993-97.
He was a public delegate to the Millennium General Assembly
in 2000 and special advisor to the UN at the 1992 Earth
Summit in Rio. He was born in the United States and was
educated at Harvard College, Yale Law School, and was a
Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University. He is currently professor
of law and international organization at Columbia Law School
and counsel to Morgan Lewis. He is author of several books
on international affairs, including In Pursuit of World
Order: US Foreign Policy and International Organizations
and Sterling-Dollar Diplomacy: The Origin and the Future
of the Bretton Woods-Gatt system.
