Martii Ahtisaari (1938-
) is the former president of Finland (1994-2000) and secretary
of state in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1991). He served
as ambassador to Tanzania, Zambia, Somalia, and Mozambique
(1973-89) and was appointed United Nations Commissioner
for Namibia (1977-81), special representative of the secretary-general
for Namibia (1978), and in 1989 led UNTAG in Namibia. In
2005, he served as a mediator between the Free Aceh Movement
and the Indonesian Government and was appointed special
envoy for the future status process for Kosovo. He was born
in Finland and educated at Helsinki Polytechnic.
