Mary Smieton (1902-2005)
was the first director of personnel in the United Nations
(1946-1948). She held this position on secondment from the
Ministry of Labour in the United Kingdom, returning to the
ministry as permanent secretary. She was made a Dame for
her contribution in 1949 and retired from government service
in 1963. During the 1960s she served as the UK representative
on the board of UNESCO. She was born in the UK and was educated
at Cambridge University.
