Nafis Sadik (1929- ) began
working with the UN Population Fund in 1971, serving as
executive director (1987-2000). During this period, she
served in 1994 as secretary-general of the International
Conference on Population and Development. She is a member
of the Board of Governors of the Foundation for Human Development,
and a member of the South Asian Commission on the Asian
Challenge. She was the President of the Society for International
Development (1994-97). She is a member of the Secretary-General’s
High-level Panel on Threats, Challenges, and Change. She
was born in India and educated at Loreto House in Calcutta,
Dow Medical College in Karachi, and the Johns Hopkins University.
