Nafis Sadik (1929- ) began working with the UN Population Fund in 1971, serving as executive director (1987-2000). During this period, she served in 1994 as secretary-general of the International Conference on Population and Development. She is a member of the Board of Governors of the Foundation for Human Development, and a member of the South Asian Commission on the Asian Challenge. She was the President of the Society for International Development (1994-97). She is a member of the Secretary-General’s High-level Panel on Threats, Challenges, and Change. She was born in India and educated at Loreto House in Calcutta, Dow Medical College in Karachi, and the Johns Hopkins University. Among her publications are Making a Difference: Twenty-five Years of UNFPA Experience.
