Elisabeth Rehn (1935- ) is a former minister of defence of Finland (1990-95), minister of equality affairs (1991-1995), and served as Member of the European Parliament (1995-96). Her UN affiliations include UN special rapporteur for the situation of human rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (1995-98); UN under-secretary-general, special representative of the Secretary-General in Bosnia and Herzegovina (1998-99). She also served as UNIFEM Independent Expert on a Global Assessment on the Impact of War on Women and their role in the Peace Process (2001-2003). She was born in Finland and educated at the University of Helsinki. Her recent publications include Women, War and Peace: The Independent Experts’ Assessment on the Impact of Armed Conflict on Women and Women’s Role in Peace-building, with Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
