Surendra J. Patel (1923-2006)
was one of India's most distinguished economists. In his
rich and varied career, he was senior advisor at the World
Institute of Development Economics Research (WIDER) and
visiting Professor at the Institute of Development Studies.
He joined the United Nations in 1950 and retired in 1984
as the director of UNCTAD's Technology Division. He was
born and educated in India and is the author of several
books and scholarly articles focusing on development issues.
