I.G. Patel (1924-2005) was UNDP’s deputy administrator (1972-77). From 1958 to 1961, he was executive director for India at the IMF. Before this, he worked as an economist at the IMF (1950-54) and in the Indian Ministry of Finance (1954-58, 1961-67) for which he became secretary for economic affairs (1968-1972). After leaving UNDP, he was governor of the Reserve Bank of India; director of the Indian Institute of Management, and director of the London School of Economics. In 1995 he was a member of the Commission on Global Governance. He was born in India and educated there at Baroda College and Bombay University, as well as at Cambridge and Harvard Universities. His recent publications include Economic Reform and Global Change.
