Johan Kaufmann (1918-1999)
was economic counselor (1956-61) and then permanent representative
of the Netherlands to the United Nations in both New York
and Geneva (1961-69 and 1974-78). He was also permanent
representative to the OECD (1969-74) and Ambassador to Japan
(1978-83). He was born in the Netherlands and educated in
Amsterdam and at the University of Geneva. He wrote prolifically
about multilateral diplomacy at the UN, including The
Diplomacy of International Relations: Selected Writings;
Conference Diplomacy: An Introductory Analysis; and
The Evolving United Nations: Principles and Realities.
