Enrique Iglesias (1931-
) is secretary-general of The Ibero-American Cooperation
Secretariat and was president of the Inter-American Development
Bank (1988-2005). From 1972 to 1985, he was executive secretary
of ECLAC. He was Uruguay’s minister of external relations,
representative to ECLAC, and president of the Central Bank.
In 1981, he served as secretary-general of the UN Conference
on New and Renewable Sources of Energy, and in 1986 chairman
of the conference that launched the Uruguay Round of Trade
Negotiations. He was born in Spain and is a naturalized
Uruguayan citizen, who was educated at the University of
the Republic of Uruguay. He is also currently the president
of the Society of International Development.
