Virenda Dayal (1935- )
worked at the UN from 1965 to 1993, retiring after serving
as chef de cabinet for Secretaries-General Pérez
de Cuéllar and Boutros-Ghali. Other UN positions
included UNHCR’s Relief Operation in Bangladesh and
elsewhere, and director of the UN’s Office of Special
Political Affairs. He served on the Indian delegation to
the World Conference on Human Rights and was a member of
the Carnegie Commission on Preventing Deadly Conflicts.
He is currently the executive director of India’s
National Human Rights Commission. Before joining the UN,
he was a civil servant of the government of India. He was
born in India and educated at St. Stephen’s College
in Delhi and at Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes
Scholar.
