Michael Zammit Cutajar
(1940- ) was executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention
on Climate Change (1996-2002), after having set up and directed
the secretariat supporting the UN’s climate change
negotiations. He began his UN career in UNCTAD and returned
in several senior capacities (1967-71, 1974-78, and 1986-91)
and also worked for the UN Conference on the Human Environment
and UNEP (1971-74)). Over the 1980s, he joined the International
Foundation for Development Alternatives and was a consultant
to the UN Office for Emergency Operations in Africa and
the Office for Special Political Affairs. He was born in
Malta and educated there at St. Edward’s College and
also at the University of London.
