Kurt Waldheim (1918- )
was the fourth UN Secretary-General (1971-81). Previously,
he was Austria’s permanent representative to the UN
(1964-68) and its foreign minister (1968-71). He had earlier
served as chairman of the Safeguards Committee on the International
Atomic Energy Agency and on the UN Committee on Peaceful
Uses of Outer Space. After failing to be elected to a third
term, he was elected President of Austria in 1986. He was
born in Austria and educated at the Vienna Consular Academy
and the University of Vienna. He is the author of The
Austrian Example and Kurt Waldheim: In the Eye of
the Storm.
