Jan Pronk (1940- ) served
three times as minister for development cooperation of the
Netherlands (1973-77, 1989-1994, and 1994-98) and as minister
of housing and the environment (1998-2002). He first became
member of Parliament in 1971. From 1980-86 he was UNCTAD’s
deputy secretary-general. He was born in the Netherlands
and educated at The Netherlands School of Economics (now
part of the Erasmus University at Rotterdam). From 1965
to 1971, he was research assistant to Jan Tinbergen at The
Netherlands Economic Institute, and in 2003 after not standing
for Parliament, he assumed a research professorship at the
Institute for Social Studies in The Hague. He was special
representative of the Secretary-General for Darfur (2004-6).
