Conor Cruise O’Brien (1917- ) was Ireland’s permanent representative to the UN and head of the International Organizations Section of the Irish Government (1956-60); and in 1961-62 he served as the Secretary-General’s representative to Katanga. He was born in Ireland and educated at Trinity College. He continues to write as a columnist for Irish and British newspapers and was editor-in-chief of the Observer. He was a university president and has been a visiting professor at universities around the world. He has been at one time or another also a diplomat, politician, government minister and member of Parliament, historian, biographer, anti-war activist, intellectual, playwright, and prose stylist. His numerous works of analysis and fiction include The United Nations: Sacred Drama.
