Julia Henderson (1915- ) served with the United Nations from 1945 to 1970, including as director of the UN Division of Social Welfare (1950-1954), the Bureau of Social Affairs (1955-67), and Technical Operations (1967-70). For much of this time, she was the most senior woman staff member. She started her career in late 1945 as a member of the UN Preparatory Commission staff, working in London prior to the first session of the General Assembly in January 1946. After retiring from the UN, she became secretary general of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (1971-78). She was born in the U.S. and educated at the Universities of Illinois, Minnesota, and Harvard. Her memoirs are titled Around the World in Eighty Years.
