Just Faaland (1922- )
created the development wing of the Christian Michelsen
Institute in Bergen, Norway, and has worked as an economic
consultant for many parts of the UN and other international
organizations and in many countries since 1949, when he
started as an economist with OEEC. Subsequently he worked
for the World Bank, ILO, IFAD, FAO, WFP, UNDP, and Asian
Development Bank. He has been resident advisor to the governments
of Pakistan (1957-60) and Malaysia (1968-70) and was World
Bank resident representative in Bangladesh (1972-74). He
served as president of the OECD Development Centre (1983-85)
and chairman of the UN Committee for Development Planning
(1999-2000). He was born in Norway and educated at the Universities
of Oslo and Oxford. His numerous publications include Growth
and Ethnic Inequality: Malaysia’s New Economic Policy
and The Political Economy of Development.
