Michael W. Doyle (1948- ) served as assistant secretary-general and special adviser to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan (2001-2003). He is the Harold Brown Professor at Columbia University with joint appointments in the School of International and Public Affairs and the Law School. He was born in the United States and educated at the U.S. Air Force Academy and Harvard University. From 1977 to 2001 he was a professor of politics and international relations at Johns Hopkins and Princeton Universities and was director of Princeton’s Center of International Studies (1997-2001). He has served as a member of the External Research Advisory Committee of UNHCR, the Advisory Committee of the Lessons-Learned Unit of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations. His recent books include New Thinking in International Relations Theory and The Globalization of Human Rights.
