Lourdes Arizpe (1945- )
was assistant director-general for culture at UNESCO (1994-98),
a member of the World Commission on Culture and Development
and director of the UNESCO World Culture Report (1998
and 2001). Since the 1970s she has worked as a consultant
for ILO and UNDP and was a member of the Advisory Group
for Social Affairs for Latin America and the Caribbean Regions
for the World Bank. A Mexican national, she was educated
at the London School of Economics and the National School
of Anthropology of Mexico, and she received Fulbright-Hays
and Guggenheim grants. President of the International Social
Science Council and formerly vice-president of the Society
for International Development, her most recent publication
is Culture and Global Change.
