John Torpey is Presidential Professor of Sociology and History and Director of the Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies at The Graduate Center, City University of New York. He is the author or editor of ten books, on topics ranging from East German dissidents and intellectuals, the invention of the passport and state practices in its use, reparations for historical injustices, transatlantic relations, and social and technological change throughout history. His writings have been translated into German, French, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, and Swedish. He has served in leadership positions for the Eastern Sociological Society, on the editorial boards of Theory and Society and the Journal of Human Rights, and as editor of a book series on “Politics, History, and Social Change,” as well as on review committees for many grant awards and book prizes.
